Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy and childbirth are among life's most memorable events for many women. They are also among the most physically demanding events, changing the body in ways that can't be reversed even through a healthy diet and exercise. Women often consider plastic surgery procedures, such as breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, or liposuction, to help get back their pre-pregnancy bodies. Dr. Fady Sinno understands that combining these procedures into a single surgery called a mommy makeover at his Ellicott City and Westminster, MD practice is often the best choice for busy mothers.

About Mommy Makeover Surgery

For many moms, especially those who are finished having children, it's important for their self-esteem to regain the trim, attractive figure they once enjoyed. Weakened abdominal muscles, sagging and deflated breasts, and stubborn pockets of fat are often the physical legacy of pregnancy and childbirth. Combining breast and body contouring procedures to address all these concerns is beneficial because it can be more cost-efficient and involves only one recovery period.

Each mommy makeover is a custom combination of procedures to fit the patient's different cosmetic goals. Patients typically combine breast lift with or without breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction. Your procedure could also include other options, such as facial treatments. Dr. Sinno can guide you on what options can be safely combined in a surgery that addresses all your goals.

Dr. Sinno offers the following guidelines if you're considering a mommy makeover:

  • Be close to your desired weight before the surgery. A tummy tuck and liposuction are not weight-loss procedures.
  • If you smoke, quit at least a month before undergoing surgery.
  • Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.
  • Have a support system of family and friends to help out with your children for at least 2 weeks following the surgery.

What to Expect

Dr. Sinno performs mommy makeover procedures using general anesthesia, and you may need to stay overnight at the hospital. Because you are combining procedures, the time for the operation is longer than most individual cosmetic surgeries. A combined tummy tuck and breast augmentation, for instance, takes from 4 1/2 to 6 hours. Liposuction done as part of a tummy tuck doesn't add significant time.

Your Consultation

During your consultation with Dr. Sinno, he takes a detailed health history and performs a thorough examination to ensure you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover. Patient safety is Dr. Sinno's top priority, and he honestly evaluates your readiness to undergo surgery. He also explains the details of each component, such as where the incisions will go. The consultation is also a time for you to explain your cosmetic goals. Together, you and Dr. Sinno decide on specific details of your procedures, such as the type and size of breast implants or whether you should get a standard or mini tummy tuck.

Recovery

Every patient recovers at her own pace, but there are guidelines that can help you heal and make your recovery as comfortable as possible. There are specific instructions for the different procedures:

Tummy tuck: Most patients return home with 2 drains to empty fluid from the surgical area. Dr. Sinno wraps your abdomen in an elastic compression garment to minimize swelling. A pain pump that delivers local anesthetic in the days after surgery will help you remain comfortable. It's important to move around within 1 day of surgery, although you won't be able to stand up straight for at least 5 days.

Breast augmentation or lift: Your recovery is aided by wearing a surgical bra during the first 2 weeks after surgery. It should be worn throughout the day and night, except when bathing, to provide added support to your breasts. Breasts sometimes heal at different rates, so you may notice reduced swelling in one breast and not the other.

Dr. Sinno provides more details during a consultation, but most mommy makeover patients should plan to take about 10 to 14 days to recuperate.

Women who require a combination of more extensive procedures such as breast lift, augmentation, abdominoplasty and liposuction will be advised to stage them into 2 operations that can be done within 1 or 2 weeks from each other. This will result in shorter, safer anesthesia times, easier recovery as outpatient surgery, and still keeping a short total downtime.

Results

Your medical team will give you instructions for incision care to help your scars heal and fade quickly. Dr. Sinno is able to place tummy tuck incisions so that they are hidden when wearing a bathing suit. Most breast augmentation patients have implants inserted through an inframammary incision, which is where the bottom of the breast connects to the chest — a very discreet location.

Women who undergo mommy makeovers generally feel more confident after seeing a flatter, smoother abdomen and enhanced breasts. Your results will continue to improve over the course of a few months as swelling fades, revealing your new sleek body contours.
